12 Days of Gift Giving: Day 8

I love to add subtle holiday details throughout my home during this festive time of year; the bathroom is no exception – and what better way to add some cheer to your bathroom than with scented soap? During the holiday season a lot of stores stock up on soaps in obvious aromas like evergreen, sugar cookie and cranberry.  I have even seen some more obscure aromas like “joy”, “holiday cheer” and “fresh sparkling snowflake”, whatever that means.  Anyway, even though I love the idea of scented soap I avoid buying these for several reasons: they are all anti-bacterial, they are packed full of chemical preservatives and coloring agents and they are stored in plastic bottles.   Do not fear, I have found an easy and inexpensive way around this!

Anyone who knows me well can tell you that I love using essential oils and one of my favorite herbs to use is peppermint.  I love to drink it in a tea as a digestive aid, use it as a facial steam when I have a cold, rub it on my temples when I have a headache, use it to clean cuts or massage it into sore muscles as a pain reliever. **Always dilute peppermint oil in a carrier (olive, jojoba or almond oil) before you apply it to your skin, it can irritate or even burn you if it is too concentrated**.  Peppermint oil is a natural antibacterial and anti-fungal making it the perfect candidate for gift number eight on my list of 12 handmade gifts to give: holiday soap!

  • 16 oz. Unscented liquid soap
  • 1 teaspoon of Peppermint essential oil
  • 16-20 oz. Glass soap pump

In your clean soap bottle mix your soft soap and peppermint essential oil.  Screw on the pump and give it a good shake.  There you have it!

This easy handmade aromatic holiday gift is sure to please!  Each time you use it not only are you able to enjoy the soothing, festive scent of peppermint but due to the natural antibacterial properties of the oil you are making your hands extra clean – this is a priceless benefit during cold and flu season!  This natural peppermint soap is great for so much more than just your hands: use it to clean soiled household surfaces, children’s toys as well as cuts and scrapes. Make this item gift worthy be wrapping it with butcher’s twin and a minty candy cane! If you find yourself in need of a thoughtful holiday gift in a pinch this is the one!
