12 Days of Gift Giving: Day 2

For day two of my handmade holiday gift list we are going to talk about ornaments!  No tree is complete without at least one handmade ornament and it might as well be one from you! Handmade ornaments are a great way to commemorate very special occasions in our lives: births, marriages, graduations, vacations, anniversaries or anything that is special to your gift recipient.  There are tons of ideas for easy handmade ornaments; a simple Google search or the perusing of a board on Pinterest will reveal this to be true.  Some ornaments are fancy and need plenty of skill or require odd supplies, but the one I am going to share with you today can be made with supplies found from your own yard and a box filled with old holiday decorations!

Supplies:

  • Cinnamon sticks, twigs, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, really anything linear
  • Artificial berries, evergreen branches, mini pinecones, ribbon, marshmallows, or anything you want to glue
  • Jute, twine, ribbon, string or yarn
  • Ornament hook
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Directions:

For this particular ornament I used cinnamon sticks and foraged through old decorations for artificial berries and greenery.  I laid my cinnamon sticks out in the shape of a star and glued each stick together where they crossed.  While the sticks were drying I glued the berries to the greenery and then glued the bundle to the center of the star.  I cut a length of jute, tied a knot in the end of it and glued it to the back of the star.  I attached an ornament hook and hung it on the tree!

This ornament literally took about five minutes to make but it looks wonderful nestled in between the green branches.  Make this item gift worthy by adding a sentimental tag (anniversary date, date of birth, etc.), signing your name and dating the back.  Place it in a pretty box filled with tissue paper and slide it under the tree!

Handmade ornaments are a great project for your kiddos and would make a sweet gift for grandparents, teachers or any special adult in their life.  With a little creativity and a lot of hot glue anything is possible – sometimes the weirder the materials the greater the ornament! So start gathering your supplies, put on some holiday music and get gluing!

Cheers,

Amy
